How do I remove the white background when saving?

I'm using Photoshop 7 on the PC and the process breaks down when I draw the elliptical marque tool to create create the glass effect. I draw the ellipse, selecting inverse and then nothing happens after I hit the delete key.
Can you suggest anything?
